Sentinel-1 for Science Amazonas - Forest Loss Maps

“Forests help offset a quarter of anthropogenic emissions of fossil-fuel, and hold up to 70-90% of the Earth’s terrestrial carbon.”

With International Day of Forests approaching, we need to remember that the health of our forests is in great danger. To prevent it from further escalation, continuous monitoring and pattern analysis are crucial to identify the root cause and implement preventative measures.

Sentinel-1 for Science Amazonas, an ESA funded project, demonstrates an operational approach for monitoring forest cover change and potential deforestation across the Amazon Basin using Sentinel-1 C-band SAR time-series. By analysing years of data, the project shows forest loss and provides scientists a cloud-free visualization of the area impacted.
